Branch meeting

At today's meeting we addressed these issues.

1) Unilever pension dispute

We heard a report on the dispute, voted to send a message of solidarity to the strikers and took a collection in aid of their hardship fund.

2) Warwick Higher Education Summit

We received a notice about the summit. The subject is "Can the public university be saved?". The date is 28 January 2012 and the venue is the University of Warwick. More details.

3) USS pension dispute

We heard a progress report on the dispute and voted overwhelmingly to support a resolution to submit a motion to UCU in favour of continued industrial action.

USS pension update

UCU member Dr Tom Pike, a reader in microengineering at Imperial College London, claims the longevity risk put forward by university employers as the main reason for cutting USS pension benefits "not only misleads staff as to the basis of any concern but ignores the much higher risks to the health of the fund that might result from USS investment strategy".

Read about his claim in an article in the Times Higher Education.

Branch lobbies Sally Hunt on pension dispute

The executive sent a letter (pdf) today to Sally Hunt, General Secretary of the UCU, calling on UCU negotiators to take a tough stand in the ongoing negotiations over cuts to member's USS pensions.
